Use Numbers Or Write Them Out?
Use Numbers Or Write Them Out?Using numbers on your resume writing is a good idea, but not every candidate likes them. Most of the people who apply for jobs usually want to use a lot of relevant information to create a well-written resume, and writing out numbers does not make that easier. It makes it harder to understand the numbers. They do not always flow in the same way as they would in a spreadsheet. Sometimes they do not make sense, either, which leads some candidates to not even bother with numbers on their resumes at all.The other drawback to using numbers on resume writing is that they are easy to duplicate. If someone has a certain number written on the back of his resume, then that person can easily find it in a public records database and write down his information the same way. Even if he or she already has the information he needs, he or she can just get it from the computer and paste it into his or her resume.Numbers used on resumes can be hard to decipher, especially w hen they are not in black and white. They can also be hard to explain. When you see a number and wonder what it means, the best thing to do is to actually look it up on Google and see what it means. Most of the time, numbers don't mean anything. They are part of the language that candidates learn as they go through life. It's how you express yourself. They can be used to add to the impact can be added to the numbers when they are used in resume writing.Numbers should not be limited to speaking, though. Other types of numbers are much more effective than the ones we are used to. Numbers in resumes can show leadership and the ability to solve problems, but if they are not written in a way that makes sense, or they don't stand out, they could end up being looked over because the numbers are not the same as the rest of the resume.Numbers should be made to stand out. That is the reason that almost every job requires the use of numbers. They are not allowed to stand out so much that they a re not visible on the cover of the resume, but they should be present to make a statement. If you still feel that writing out numbers is not worth the effort, consider the benefits of using numbers on your resume writing. Not only will they be able to easily tell who you are, but they will also help you look great on the cover of the resume that you send out. No matter what numbers that you use, make sure they make an impact and not detract from the rest of your resume.

Email Etiquette During a Job Search
Email Etiquette During a Job Search A few days ago I heard a story about someone who quit their job over the content of an email. Through conversation and a few apologies, the employee returned to work, but when you think about it, its amazing how powerful email can be. A mis-use of capital letters, a penchant for constantly hitting send to all, and endless disclaimers, inspirational messages, and graphics on emails can put some people over the edge. Seth Godin has a great checklist on email etiquette that you can read here.Email plays an important role in a job search, but its got to be managed properly. Here are a few tips for using email in a search campaign. When sending resumes and follow up letters, always use a compelling subject line. Dont just type in John Smiths resumeinstead try Award Winning Creative Director or Bi-lingual Marketing Executive. Stand out from the crowd and show a glimpse of your professional identity and personal brand.Always use a signature line. Make it easy for your contacts to get in tou ch with you. Include a brief signature line with your name, phone, and email addressevery time you send an email. In addition to being a courtesy to your reader, the signature line also creates a more professional presentation. When following up on job leads dont send multiple emails. One email is enough. Supplement your follow up efforts with phone callsbut dont leave multiple messages. Leave one message and then call different times of the day and different days of the week in an attempt to get the person live.Realize when a conversation is better. If you find yourself going back and forth more than two times on the same question or issue with a potential hiring manager or recruiter, its probably time for a phone call.

How to Get past Robots and Get Your Resume In Front Of Recruiters - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
How to Get past Robots and Get Your Resume In Front Of Recruiters In this era of digitalization, no business process has remained unaffected by the technological innovations that incorporate the use of automated tools for achieving the desired outcome. Human Resources Management is not an exception. Whether itâs day-to-day tasks, such as recording attendance and entry/exit timings, or periodical activities, like maintaining payroll and conducting training sessions, or critical functions, such as hiring employees and evaluating performance, various aspects of human resources management are tackled with the help of dedicated application programs. Recruitment, which is an integral part of running a business enterprise, is also carried out by using an automated system that pre-filters the resumes at the initial stage. An Applicant tracking system or ATS scans the resumes received with respect to the job advertisement posted by an organization. Shocking as it may sound, more than half of the applications get discarded by an ATS. Why you should be worried about ATS? The increasing number of employers, including companies that hire OPT students across different industries are leveraging ATS software for making their hiring process smooth, efficient, and accurate. Though the intended benefits of an applicant tracking system are to save time and efforts, many times, employers lose great candidates due to the algorithm applied. Therefore, even if you deserve one chance, being the right candidate for the position, your resume might not get past the robots of ATS. While itâs a loss for both parties involved, the impact would be more severe on you, especially when you need a job urgently or the job market is tight. In such a scenario, itâs important that you utilize necessary tips and tricks for creating a resume that can beat the applicant tracking system used by the potential employer. Donât know how to do that? Worry not as we have revealed some secrets that can make your resume not only reach the hiring manager but also impress him. Craft an ATS-Friendly Resume with our Tips Keep in mind the following points for building an ATS-friendly resume. These points are useful for every job aspirant irrespective of the position or location of a job. Write an Impactful Title in Bold Letters Just as your face reflects your personality, the topmost part of your resume speaks volumes about your caliber. Therefore, you must include a title at the beginning of your resume. This title should represent your current job profile and your suitability for the desired job title in a succinct manner. Mentioning the job title you are applying for will make it easy for your resume to pass through an applicant tracking system. When your resume will make towards the hiring committee, your application will stand out from the rest. Replace Career Objective With Professional Summary The career objective section, which was once considered to be a critical part of any resume, has now fallen out of favor. Employers are more interested in learning about the current goals and expectations of prospective candidates rather than their long-term career objectives. Instead of your aspirations, write a professional summary describing your qualifications, experience, talent, expertise, and achievements that have been of paramount importance in the establishment and growth of your career. You should include keywords in this summary. We will discuss more on keywords in the next point. Include the Right Keywords Organically Keywords are the essence of a resume as they help the reader (whether itâs a human or software) assess the relevance of the candidate with regard to the vacancy. Keywords are terms or phrases used for sketching out the job role and responsibilities. For example, the job title âNetwork Security Administrator Jobsâ is a keyword for the job applications for this type of role. You can find the right keywords from the job advertisement as well as online profiles of people employed in the same or similar positions. You should use these keywords in different sections of your resume as organically as possible. Remember that stuffing the keywords might get your resume past the ATS robots, but it can lead to disqualification or rejection of your candidature by the hiring team. Opt for Simple Layout and Neat Formatting As much as you want to highlight your academic accolades or professional accomplishments in a colorful box or a stylish table, you should never do it. An applicant tracking system cannot read graphical elements, and so, your vital information will not be entered into the system. As a result, you will be filtered out of the list of candidates. You should always choose the simple layout and neat formatting for your resume. Name various sections of your resume as usual, for example, âEducational Backgroundâ and âEmployment Historyâ. For bulleted list items, use standard bullet shapes, like solid circles or solid squares. Keep the font-weight regular or bold, and font type normal. Steer clear of logos, images, charts, symbols, tables, shadings, unfamiliar section names, fancy typefaces, and light-colored fonts. Make your Resume More Suitable for the Opening The applicant tracking system software utilized by employers in todayâs time are more robust and intricate than before. Therefore, you should include as many keywords as possible. Along with core keywords, you should also focus on modified versions of key phrases. For example, if the job title is âProject Managerâ, you can use the terms âProject Execution Managerâ and âProject Leaderâ along with âProject Managerâ. Present your educational background and employment history in chronological order and reverse chronological order respectively. Include information about your previous jobs which demanded the knowledge and skills as mentioned in the description of the job you have set your eyes on. If the job titles of your previous jobs were creative or non-conventional, replace them with conventional titles. Donât Include Crucial Facts in Header and Footer Some applicant tracking system programs cannot read the information included in the header and footer of a resume. So, it is in your best interest to avoid using header and footer for mentioning crucial facts about yourself. Generally, job seekers include their contact details in the header. This should not be a cause of concern unless the employer has set filters for geographical location in their ATS. You can create a separate section at the top or in the body of your resume for showing your contact details, such as temporary/permanent residential address, town, city, state, phone number, zip code, email address, and so on. This way, you wonât lose out on the opportunity provided by a prospective employer whose preferred location is the same as your location. Use Word Document as File Type for your Resume You should follow the instructions given in the job advertisement for deciding the file type for your resume. Unless any specific file type is mentioned, you should send your resume as a word document to be on the safe side. Avoid PDF file format at all costs as the applicant tracking system cannot scan PDF files. You can make your name, desired job title, and employerâs name a part of your resume fileâs name. For example, if your name is âRuby Greenâ, the title of the job you wish to get is âWarehouse Executiveâ, and the name of the company offering this job is âHealthy Foodâ, then the name of your resume file can be âRuby Green-Warehouse Executive-Healthy Food-Resumeâ or âApplication for Warehouse Executive-Ruby Greenâ. Conclusion Give yourself a pat on the back! You made it to the conclusion. Now, before you close the tab with a thought that all the points have been covered, let us tell you that something is still left. Every applicant tracking system software is designed differently. But the above-mentioned tips will prove to be beneficial in every case. You need to go through the job posting carefully to get an idea of the requirements, keywords, and terminology. Wherever you are using acronyms in your resume, make sure to include the complete words as well. No need to panic over an increase in the number of pages in the file. Before submitting your resume, check all spellings and remove grammatical errors. You can also ask someone else to read your resume properly before sending it. Last but not the least, it can never hurt to approach the hiring manager for discussing your application. Ask for What You Want At Work. Or Dont Ask for Orange Juice if You Want Grape Juice -
Ask for What You Want At Work. Or Dont Ask for Orange Juice if You Want Grape Juice - Have you ever known someone who doesnt ever seem to know just what he or she wants? I know someone like that. In fact, I know him really well. Hes my 2-year old. He is in a constant state of not knowing exactly what he wants. A typical conversation: Him: I want peanut butter and jelly. On bread. Me: You want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Can you ask in a nice way? Him: No. I want a waffle. (He proceeds to start removing an apple from the refrigerator.) Another typical conversation at our house: Him: I want orange juice. Me: Whats a nice way to ask? (Pouring orange juice.) Him: Please! No, I dont want orange juice. I want GRAPE juice. In a cup. I think you get the picture. If Im lucky, he changes his mind before I prepare what he initially requested, but more often than not, Im faced with trying to convince him to eat what he originally wanted or starting over. If I had a dollar for every time I say, OhI should have known that when you asked for orange juice (and took it out), it really meant that you want grape juice! I would be on some island somewhere someone would be serving ME drinks! So, what does this have to do with the topic at hand? What does it have to do with your job? Think about it Do you really know what you want? Are you like the 2-year old who is asking for orangeà juice, but really wanting grape juice? Are you impulsive, asking for (or wishing for) the first thing that comes to your mind? Unlike my 2-year old, whose only real consequence for his indecision is needing to say a few extra pleases or being stuck with whatever he first requested, there are real consequences for professionals who either dont know what they want or dont know how to ask for it. What to do? Stop and think! Tiffany Monhollon writes that you should stop, listen and move. It isnt always easy to figure out what you really want. It certainly isnt easy to decide to make a major change in the hopes of accomplishing what you really want. It is worth it, though. Dont let life, or your job, just happen TO you. Stop. Listen. Move. If you want grape juice dont just ask for it do what my 2-year old does when he is really desperate and Im taking too long get it out and pour it yourself! Why We HATE Writing Cover Letters - Work It Daily
Why We HATE Writing Cover Letters - Work It Daily If there is one thing that's annoying about job search, it's probably writing the perfect cover letter for your resume. It's meant to be short and crisp, and must entail all the right elements necessary for you to land that dream job! It isnât very easy to write a flawless cover letter with passion, but it must be done. Why would you want to let such a small letter affect what may be the chance of your lifetime? Come to think of it, it's not a very taxing task, but we tend to stretch the whole process and get irked when it stands between our CV and the recruiter. Related: The Importance Of âMirroringâ In Your Cover Letter Here are a few reasons why we HATE writing cover letters. And, more importantly, four new ways to make the procedure a tad less painful. You Like To Believe Itâs Boring The worst part about creating cover letters is that they can feel formulaic. One tends to get bored of writing the same old things over and over again. You hate to sound like a robot, and if you are working off that template, things will get dull pretty fast. Solution: The key is to get more creative. Remember, this is your one chance to stand out from the rest of the crowd and take your candidature forward. So, take it up as a challenge, put in some extra energy, and lend more personality to the letter. Donât forget, if you feel bored while writing it, it will show in the tone and language, and the recruiter will also become uninterested. Always keep it conversational and start by mentioning how much you love the company or how came in contact with it for the first time. Nervousness Takes Over Do nerves get the best of you when you decide to sit down and create a cover letter? It is possible that you suddenly freeze up from the pressure as you realize that a few lines can make or break your chances of landing a good job. What if you end up writing something wrong, make a grammatical mistake, or go overboard and seem desperate? With so much stress inside your little head, things are bound to become unexciting. No wonder why you hate writing cover letters! Solution: Do not take it up as an exercise on which your life depends. Think of it as writing an e-mail. You will be more calm and relaxed, and will understand that there is no rocket science behind writing a cover letter. So, get over with those jitters by treating your cover letter as just another e-mail you are sending off. You can draft it now, then review and customize it later. Working in phases will bring more clarity. Writing About Yourself Is A Pain The worst part about creating a cover letter is that you need to brag about yourself the entire time. You may not be someone who blows his or her own trumpet, but when writing a cover letter, you must uninhibitedly declare all your accomplishments and skills. Solution: It is understandable that talking about your undertakings in an official letter feels uncomfortable and unnatural. You can start by taking a separate sheet and listing out what you have achieved, and what skills have helped you with those achievements. Then, imagine that you are someone else drafting the letter. Being a ghost writer is an easy way to get a fresh perspective. Think of yourself as the writer who is the mentor, friend, or past employer of the applicant, then see how easy it becomes to sing praises. You may be scared to pull yourself together after a string of non-productive job searches. You may even be tired of repeatedly writing resumes and cover letters. No matter what your reason is, pace yourself and begin writing with a fresh mind. The cover letter will hopefully help you land that job interview.
